Put Cloud Castly on your TV
Most TVs only need a browser: open cloudcastly.com, scan the code with your phone, done. If you turn on your TV's developer mode you can also install it as an app. This page shows how, TV by TV.
What works where
| TV | Installed app | Becomes home screen |
|---|---|---|
| Android TV / Google TV | Yes | Yes (opt-in, reversible) |
| Fire TV | Yes | No (Fire OS blocks it) |
| Samsung (Tizen) | Yes | No |
| LG (webOS) | Yes | No |
| Roku | Not yet | No |
Developer mode is switched on by you, on your own TV. Nothing here is needed to use Cloud Castly: the browser works on all of these TVs.
Android TV / Google TV
- On the TV open Settings > Device Preferences > About and click Build seven times.
- Open Developer options and turn on USB debugging (or Network debugging).
- On a computer on the same Wi-Fi, with the Cloud Castly APK downloaded, connect and install (use your TV's IP address):
adb connect <tv-ip>:5555
adb install -r cloudcastly-tv.apk
- Open Cloud Castly from the app row. It runs full screen, stays awake and restarts when the TV does.
- Optional: in the app choose Make Cloud Castly my home screen. It sets itself as Home and can disable vendor apps you pick. Nothing is uninstalled.
To undo it, choose Restore original TV in the app. It also restores the stock home screen by itself if the app crashes three times in five minutes.
Turn debugging off when you are done. Network debugging is not encrypted.
Fire TV
Same steps as Android TV, but enable Settings > My Fire TV > Developer Options > ADB debugging and Apps from Unknown Sources, then adb connect and adb install. Fire OS does not accept a third-party home screen, so Cloud Castly launches from Your Apps instead.
Samsung (Tizen)
- Open Apps on the TV, press 1 2 3 4 5 on the remote, switch Developer mode on, enter your computer's IP, and restart the TV.
- Build the package in Tizen Studio (Build Signed Package). Newer TVs need it signed with a Samsung certificate.
- Connect to the TV in Device Manager and install the
.wgtfile.
TizenBrew can install it for you without a computer.
LG (webOS)
- Install LG's Developer Mode app from the LG Content Store, sign in, switch Dev Mode and Key Server on, and restart. Note the passphrase.
- On a computer:
npm i -g @webos-tools/cli
ares-setup-device
ares-package webos
ares-install -d <tv> com.cloudcastly.tv_1.0.0_all.ipk
Developer Mode on LG turns off after 1,000 hours unless you extend it in the Developer Mode app.
Roku
Roku has no web browser, and a Roku app can't open a web page. Channels are written in Roku's own BrightScript language, so the app that works on the other TVs can't simply be wrapped for Roku. A Roku channel would be a separate build, and it isn't ready.
What works today: mirror it
- On your phone or laptop open
cloudcastly.com/tv(a laptop) orcloudcastly.com, then use the phone remote as usual. - Send that screen to the Roku with screen mirroring: AirPlay from iPhone or Mac, or Miracast from Windows or Android. On the Roku, turn it on in Settings > System > Screen mirroring.
Mirroring uses your phone or laptop's screen, so keep it on and nearby.
If you want to try a Roku developer build
You don't need this for mirroring. Once a Roku channel exists, it is installed like this:
- On the Roku remote press Home three times, Up twice, then Right, Left, Right, Left, Right.
- In the Developer Settings screen choose Enable installer and restart, accept the terms, set a web password and note the Roku's IP address.
- On a computer on the same Wi-Fi open
http://<roku-ip>, sign in asrokudevwith your password, and upload the channel.zipin the Application Installer.
A sideloaded channel can't become the Roku home screen, and Roku allows one developer channel at a time.
I did all the steps: add the Cloud Castly app
Opens a new tab that looks for your Roku on your Wi-Fi.
